DUMA, WHERE ARE YOU?

Asks Andy Mason.

Sibusiso Duma is another local fine artist with phenomenal comic art skills. Some examples of his recent work are currently on display at the Africcan Art centre, now relocated to Florida Road. A few weeks ago I gave Sibusiso some Indian ink and a couple of cheap brushes and asked him to do some inkwash drawings – he had never worked in ink on paper before, having learnt the art of oil on board from the late great Trevor Makhoba, who himself never drew in ink and used to go directly to oils without preparatory drawings. This drawing was one of six or seven that Duma came back with a few days later, plus a sketchbook filled with pencil roughs. I’m hoping he’ll be joining us on the Sketchbook Project very soon, but in the meantime, enjoy this boldly crafted township scene.
